Job Description

Experienced felony level Deputy District Attorney specializing in prosecution of adult and child sexual assault and human trafficking cases across all four counties of the judicial district.  This position is part of a four to five person team consisting of victim services, investigations, legal admin / paralegal support, and prosecution.  The unit works collaboratively across the district with apx. 20 law enforcement agencies and assists law enforcement in responding to, investigating, and prosecuting felony sex crimes and human trafficking cases.  Travel to all four offices within the district is required and is typically done with other members of the SVU team.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate from ABA accredited law school.
  • License to practice law in Colorado at the time of appointment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 5 years’ experience handling felony caseload with focus on sexual assault, human trafficking, and child victim cases.

Duties

  • Represent the People in the 5th Judicial District in adult and child sex crime cases.
  • Responsible for management of district-wide caseload; from assisting law enforcement in the initial investigation, the filing of charges, grand jury presentations, trials and post-conviction matters.
  • Ensure that victims of these crimes are treated with dignity and respect, and that they have a voice throughout all stages in the criminal justice system.
  • Provide mentorship and training to less experienced DDAs in misdemeanor and felony sex crimes, human trafficking, and crimes against children cases.
  • Provide legal advice and training to law enforcement. 
  • Engage in specialty assignments as requested  by the District Attorney (i.e., specialty courts, community engagement, POST teaching opportunities, on-call for homicides/ sexual assaults / human trafficking cases.)

Skills  and Responsibilities

  • Ability to manage a heavy caseload.
  • Ability to handle extensive research and writing assignments including responding to complex constitutional motions, novel issues of law, mentoring and reviewing less experienced DDA’s research and writing assignments.
  • Ability to review and analyze arrest and search warrants from law enforcement.
  • Effective interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a high-stress environment, and maintain professional relationships with co-workers, law enforcement, victims, defense counsel, court staff and officials, and the general public.
  • Must be committed to protecting the public and working to improve the treatment of victims in the criminal justice system through a trauma informed approach.
