[Webinar] Animal Cruelty that Occurs with Intimate Partner Violence and Family Violence

A recent study offers new insights on “the link”, cases of animal cruelty that occur alongside intimate partner violence (IPV) and family violence (FV). This research relies on data from the FBI’s National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to explore characteristics of 278 animal cruelty incidents that occurred with IPV or FV in 2020. The NIBRS data collection gathers details about animal cruelty crimes as well as over 50 other offenses that are reported to law enforcement agencies across the United States. Previous research on the link between IPV and FV will be presented to provide a context for the current findings and to illustrate how these current findings support and expand that work. We also will explore the potential of this current research to inform the prosecution of these offenses.
