Internet Security Laws Will Be Focus of New Program
9/02/10
Law school students, prosecutors and homeland security agents will have the chance to learn more about cybersecurity law - an emerging area concerning online terrorism - as part of a project sponsored by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.  The Cybersecurity Law Project, which will be held at two Newark law schools, is one of the first of its kind nationwide, said Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.  "Prosecutors need people with more knowledge regarding cybersecurity and the law," Ricciardelli said, adding that one of the school's goals is providing students with professional contacts and internships in state offices.

Murders Down 40% After Gang Meetings in Cincinnati
9/02/10
David Kennedy -- the New York professor behind a nearly 15-year-old law enforcement strategy of warning gang leaders to put their guns down or else -- said he expects Chicago will see a dramatic decrease in killings after launching a pilot program here.  It has been done in about 60 jurisdictions across the country, including Cincinnati, where murders are down about 40 percent since 2007, Kennedy said.  Kennedy, director of the Center for Crime Prevention and Control at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, is an adviser for the Chicago program.
On Aug. 17, representatives of law-enforcement agencies met with a small group of alleged gang chiefs from the West Side.  Police told the leaders they must stop the killing or they and their gangs would immediately be targeted by law-enforcement officials with everything from federal conspiracy charges to increased parole visits and traffic enforcement.

MBTA Announces Twitter and Texting Options to Fight Crime
9/01/10
The MBTA today launched new crime fighting tools to report transit scoundrels on Twitter and text messaging.  "Hopefully it will be another tool in our crime fighting tool box to send tips and photos to crack down on some of these perpetrators," said T General Manager Richard Davey.  The T vowed to set up a Twitter page for customers to report crime tips after a Herald story about a tweeting T rider who posted a real-time photo on the social networking site of a man allegedly exposing himself aboard a crowded Red Line train. The man in the photo was later arrested.  The Twitter page is @MBTATransitPD.
